About Us

L. Susan Sikes, MA, NCC, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with Mental Health Service Provider designation in the state of Tennessee (LPC/MHSP #2864).I am certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC #240851), the American Psychotherapy Association (ID#15569), and the Association for Play Therapy as a Registered Play Therapist (#T2889). I am also a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (IATP) and am a Certified Therapist in EMDR (EMDRIA). I am a longstanding member of the Chi Sigma Iota Counseling Honor Society, The American Counseling Association, and The Smokey Mountain Counseling Association.

Psychotherapy is a second career for me as I taught in the NC public school system for 30 years before beginning graduate studies in Mental Health Counseling at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I graduated in 2008 and was immediately hired at United Family Services, which had been my internship site for the year preceding graduation. I worked as a generalist there from 2008 - 2011. I enjoyed a diverse client base while there as I worked extensively with individuals of all ages, couples, families and groups.

In addition to my private practice in Chattanooga, I also teach master's level classes in Counseling at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga as an adjunct faculty member (Spring 2012-present).

I have received specialized training in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples, Guided Imagery with Music and Mindfulness-Based Therapy. I have an excellent client record and I take my profession very seriously. I am ready to help you and your family lead healthy, strong lives.

Pam Guess, Ph.D., NCSP

Licensed Psychologist

I began my career as an early childhood educator; as my fascination with human growth and change deepened, I pursued graduate training and earned a Ph.D. in Psychology. I have subsequently practiced for more than twenty-five years in the Chattanooga area in a variety of roles and settings. During this time, my beginning interest in working with young children has evolved into an appreciation for healthy development throughout the lifespan. These varied experiences have gifted me with the opportunity of working alongside individuals and families as they have faced physical, emotional, interpersonal, and intrapersonal life challenges. In this process, I have deepened into a dedicated belief in the strength of the human spirit expressed through a natural and determined desire to heal and to be whole. I believe we have an extraordinary capacity to move toward wellness and health; while life challenges and transitions often shift our focus to what may feel fragile within, I passionately believe that a change in our thoughts and emotions can serve as a vehicle toward health.

In my practice, I emphasize the development of a self-care plan as a crucial tool that can enhance and support well-being. I use multiple approaches including cognitive-behavioral, depth psychological, relaxation, mindfulness, mind-body, Reiki, guided imagery and music-assisted therapeutic strategies. I have also observed how humor can often be an invaluable tool in assisting us toward health and well-being. I believe these approaches can be applied to a wide variety of challenges including depression, anxiety, personal discovery, and changes in physical health, including adjusting to chronic pain, serious medical diagnoses, and end-of-life issues.

A strong commitment to client-centered goals and beliefs underlies any approach I may take; I prioritize being present and offering a genuinely safe environment as invaluable supports for beginning to imagine healing in body, mind, and spirit.
